It’s not rare to see the likes of Odin and Zeus wreaking havoc in your favorite comics. Time and time again Hercules, Loki and so many others have popped up causing world threatening mayhem or helping out our favorite superhero. Whatever the case it’s always an epic delight whenever they show up.
That said, it’s more rare to find African gods and monsters causing just as much trouble, but that doesn’t mean it never happens. Here are three times African gods totally kicked ass in comics.
3. ANUBIS: FANTASTIC FOUR VOL1 #608

First up on our list is Anubis. Appearing in Fantastic four volume 1 #608, the Egyptian deity backed by his army of the dead threatens to bring Wakanda to heel. Even the combined efforts of Susan Storm, Shuri the then Black Panther and Storm are not nearly enough to fend him off. In the end it takes the intervention of Bast the panther goddess to save Wakanda from certain destruction.
2. SHANGO : VISIONARY #0

The legendary Orisha appears in comic republics Visionary #0 in which he throws down with his fellow Orisha Oxossi giving us quite the brawl. From what we see he clearly has the upper hand in the fight but sadly we’re yet to see the conclusion of that battle. None the less the thunder god as usual did not fail to impress!
1. ANANSE: JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA VOL2 #26

Last but not least is Ananse. In Justice League of America volume 2 #26 Ananse alters reality in order to test his champion Vixen. When Vixen assembles a team to stop him her efforts backfire when he simply turns them all against her. That’s quite a turn about considering alternate versions of Batman and Wonderwoman were also members. Fortunately for the heroes he had no real evil intent so things turned out nicely but it would have been nice to see him put the beat down on them…just a little bit!
It seems the ancient gods of Africa are not done just yet, and as time goes on we can expect to see more from them, more great battles and more fantastical adventures. Whatever happens they’ll always be there reminding us about the ancients and connecting us to them in a way nothing else can. They are Africa’s heritage and you can expect them to rock the comic pages for a long time to come!
